Endoscopic techniques in neurosurgery were first used at the beginnings of the last century. In Argentina the first publications on this subject were done by Roque Orlando and Prof. Manuel Balado in 1931, but technical difficulties presented by the endoscopes of that time discouraged its use.
With the arrival of new technologies, such as cold light sources, fiberoptic beams, Hopkins telescope and micro-processed cameras, endoscopic procedures in neurosurgery underwent a renaissance and popularization in the eighties and nineties.
This phenomenon began in our region in the decade of 1990, when several groups began to perform their first experiences with the method, which was accepted gradually by the neurosurgical society. At the moment, there is not doubt on the safety and effectiveness of the method, whenever the indications are precise, there is availability of suitable technical means and the operators are well trained.
By this means we would like to spread experiences and information on training courses to allow the new generations of neurosurgeons reach the necessary knowledge to continue with the development of the technique in our region.
